While at school I only half-heartedly learnt languages because “Everyone speaks English”. I bitterly regreted that the day I started a job in France where it turned out that most people spoke no English at all, especially my boss (patron). I suddenly found myself paying a fortune for individual private lessons.
What I wish had been explained to me in my youth is that learning a foreign language actually increases your intelligence and furthermore that learning a 2nd or 3rd foreign language becomes even easier. Similarly learning a musical instrument boosts your intelligence.
Having worked abroad with other English speakers I noted that those who made no effort to learn the lingo remained trapped in a micro-world of English pubs, while those that immediately made the effort to learn a few hundred foreign words and expressions eventually became fluent.
Keep your brain fit never stop learning!!
