Horses have been part of our lives for hundreds if not thousands of years. They have been used, ridden, treasured and abused by humans . The ancient Greeks and Trojans went to war with their horses. In art, the most important warriors are often depicted riding their horse into battle. Horses accompanied the pilgrims to North America and they are still useful and much loved animals today.
Some are lucky to own their horse, others perhaps share a horse with a friend or rent one by the hour.
There is no doubt that there is something magical about the relationship between man (or woman) and his horse. Horse riding for pleasure can be relaxing or exhilarating depending on the nature of the horse and the competence of the rider. There is something beguiling about images of riders canter through forests or along the edge of the beach, splashing through incoming waves.
Of course some people still ride a horse as part of the job. They may be a professional equestrian or they may be in a ‘mounted’ occupation of some other kind. Jockeys ride horses for a living, often flying between race courses in a single day to ride their mounts
At one time, cowboys spent long days and nights on a horse while taking care of huge ranches. Some cowboys still ride horses on the range, but others now do all of their chores on the ranch in a pickup truck.
Man’s relationship with the horse is likely to endure long into the future - whether for business or pleasure.
